Bauhaus ice cream

‘California-based architects Natasha Case and Freya Estreller recently set up Coolhaus as some sort of frozen snack homage to industry icons’

I guess if there can be a Bauhaus coffee, there can be Bauhaus ice cream.

Food truck-based ‘Coolhaus’ features ice cream sandwiches with names such as Frank Behry and Mies Vanilla Rohe. Check them out here.

Local in Los Angeles, Austin and (soon in) NYC/Hamptons.

Farrell’s comeback

Before Chuck E. Cheese existed, Victorian-themed Farrell’s was THE place to go for ice cream and birthday parties. And they’ve been making a comeback. Starting in Southern California.

Always enjoyed the original menus printed on newsprint and featuring some Charles Dana Gibson (1867-1944) characters (below) on its cover.

Last time I ate at an original Farrell’s, the place was filled with gang members. And each one of them just happened to have a ‘birthday’ (which resulted in free ice cream) every ten minutes or so.

The Return of Joe’s

Rumor has it that Original Joe’s in San Francisco may be reopening this year.

Hoping to stop in for a Martini, of course.

Rice-A-Roni

‘a side dish that gave Kraft Macaroni & Cheese a run for its money in the 1950s’

Pailadzo Captanian and her Armenian rice pilaf became ‘The San Francisco Treat.’

Here’s NPR taking a look at where this Armenian/Italian treat comes from. Original recipe included.

Influence: Der Mensch als Industriepalast

‘A German, Jewish gynecologist, artist, and popular science writer extraordinaire, Fritz Kahn (1888-1968) is considered by many to be the founder of conceptual medical illustration.’

The influence of Fritz Kahn’s Der Mensch als Industriepalast (Man as Industrial Palace) was far flung.

Here’s a sum up of the work of Kahn by Vanessa Ruiz at Street Anatomy.

Film: Der Mensch als Industriepalast

‘The intertwining of science, art and technology: An animated and interactive installation based on the poster of the same title by Fritz Kahn from 1927.’

Animation by Henning M. Lederer, sound design by David Indge.

Avant Garde money

‘The third issue of Avant-Garde, May 1968, ran an attention-grabbing feature entitled ‘Revaluation of the Dollar: 19 Artists Design a New One-Dollar Bill.”

I have this issue of Avant Garde. Managed to acquire a stack of them at a rummage sale. Just thumbing thru, it’s great to see the original stuff that inspired so much 1970s revivalism this past decade.

A look at the money article here.

‘Join or Die: A long-term study of power’

Justine Lai’s art reminds me of the naughtiness that was typically seen in Ralph Ginzburg and Herb Lubalin’s groundbreaking Avant Garde magazine – where the ITC Avant Garde typeface was born. (Avant Garde predated Lubalin’s U&lc)

Posits the question: What would it be like to have sex with every American President?

Benguiat’s Caslon

‘Benguiat has frequently said he chose the number 224 because it was the address of the building where he did most of his work.’

Ed Benguiat couldn’t leave well enough alone. And in 1982, created one of the funkiest versions of Caslon ever – for ITC.

I love the swoops and the ear on top of the lowercase g.
