Hm. SacBee uses SacUnion’s fonts . . . .
The Sacramento Bee redesign, as posted on Font Bureau’s Facebook page. Fonts used include Benton Sans, Miller, Miller Daily and Miller Headline
A few years back, I was the art director for a reincarnation of The Sacramento Bee’s long time rival, The Sacramento Union.
In this version, The Union was reimagined as a magazine. We did just a handful of issues, the design concept was: ‘newspaper in magazine’ format . . .
(and after the magazine folded, a new team took over and recreated the newspaper itself as a tabloid, with . . . mixed design results)
Anyhew, in the magazine I specified Font Bureau’s Miller for text and the Benton Sans family for just about everything else. Also tied to the publication’s new personality, I used Hoefler Text, set tight, just to bulk up and add to the hedline type picks.
So imagine my surprise when last year The Bee reveals its redesign, only to find they are now using – daily – the fonts of a short-lived version of their old adversary.
I know it’s probably just them picking what works – and Benton and Miller are incredible newspaper types – but I’m honored, tickled nonetheless that my picks are now being used by The Bee.
