Genghis Kitchen

Up until a few months ago, I was living down the road from this place. I love the name, the food: not so good. Which may explain its recent closure.

Mongolian BBQ has nothing to do with Mongolia, but is a cuisine unto itself. Not anywhere near highbrow, not exactly a real BBQ. It’s a Taiwanese invention, a greasy, interactive meaty experience; the best I ever had was somewhere in Denver. The sport is all about getting as much slammed into the bowl as possible (flattening out the meat) so the food is plentiful and the trips to the grill are few.

Places with extra ingredients (such as shrimp, lamb, tofu) and seasonings (Italian herbs, Cajun spices and Rooster Sauce) are special. Ginghis (Khan) Kitchen, unfortunately, had neither. But – cool name, cool sign.

  1. When I lived in LA I used to go to a Chinese/Jewish restaurant called Ghengis Cohen — ah, it’s still there: http://www.genghiscohen.com/ – the best thing on the menu: Queen Chicken.

  2. The family & I went there today for their grand opening (reopening is more like it) because we got a flyer coupon in the mail for 20% off the bill and they were under the original owners again.
When we got in the door we noticed definite changes from the times we went before.
First thing I noticed was the tables were blank except for the soy sauces that was in containers that are used for pancake syrup.
When we were seated the host asked us what we would like to drink and if we would like some soup. She got 3 out of 4 of us on the drinks & 0 out of 2 of us that ordered the soup.
When I turned around to go get a plate for the buffet line, the trays were boarded up and the only thing being served was the mongolian bbq.
I was already disapointed that the only way to get chow mein & pepper steak is to order it off the menu.
When I got to the mongolian bbq counter I was again disappointed to find the selection was very sad.
Never never again will I go to this place. I gave them the benefit of the doubt that they cleaned up their awful dirty ways of years past and they blew their 1 chance to get it right.
BTW, the men’s restroom was out of order on their grand reopening day.
