The War of the Worlds, 1978
Jeff Wayne’s 1978 progressive rock disco show tunes concept album War of the Worlds is both a masterpiece and a hairbrained idea.
I have the original two LP set, illustrated with large paintings by artists Peter Goodfellow, Geoff Taylor and Michael Trim (pictured) – showing a Victorian world gone mad. Richard Burton narrates the invasion, with text from H.G. Wells original novel.

The album wasn’t too popular in the US, but did incredibly well overseas. Also involved in the production was Justin Hayward (of The Moody Blues), Phil Lynott, Julie Covington, David Essex and Chris Thompson.
The orchestration – especially the vocoder-made voices of the Martians – stays in your head. In the last decade, two remix albums were were released [here’s the first one, the second], following a 1998 computer game version. And an animated film is in progress, concert tour, 7-disc box set, et cetera.

The whole thing is quite mind blowing.
