‘To date it is the biggest-selling instrumental single in the history of recorded music, being the only one ever to be certified platinum’ -Wiki
In 1977, a disco version of the music from Star Wars made it big. It was played over and over on the radio. Meco Monardo was the recording artist. Album art was by Robert Rodriguez, art direction by Stephen Lumel/Gribbitt!
Hear the single below. The album (vinyl, above) didn’t actually have the single on it – instead, it featured an extended, 15 minute version (one had to also buy the single to get the single). This ‘best of’ compilation has everything. Or the track alone can be snagged here. Meco Monardo interview here.

I remember watching this too – September 23, 1977 – and it was actually cooler than The official Star Wars Holiday Special. But . . . Donnie & Marie Osmond had an actual kooky variety show, so the bad jokes and goofy dance numbers were expected.
They were pretty much among the first to really jump on the Star Wars bandwagon. The toys weren’t even out yet; most of the Star Wars tie-ins started appearing in 1978. (And they sort of had the whole Luke/Leia, brother/sister thing figured wayyy before anyone else)
With Red Foxx, Kris Kristofferson, Paul Lynde, the guy who did the voice of Tony the Tiger. And Marie: pretty good stand in for Leia. The bun hairdo works.

doug’s tour
This fall, Oklahoma City-based photographer Doug Schwarz followed LA-based band Normandie on tour. And I just happen to be designing for Normandie.
Normandie is a side project of theSTART – or another way to look at it, Doug also followed theSTART on tour because Normandie just happened to be in the same vehicle. Follow that? Hope so.
So it was fun when Doug pinged me and said he got my poster signed by everyone he talked to. It’s now part of his Wall of Inspiration (above); the signed poster (below).

tees-n-stuff
This year I also designed some tees for Normandie. They can be snagged via the new online Normandie store here. They’re running a holiday special too (details on page). One can also order a poster. [Read more →]
