Medicinal cure all salt, from Alviso

‘The All-Salt process harvests two popular commodities, sea salt and recycled pharmaceuticals from water treatment plants’

The town of Alviso is located at the bottom of San Francisco Bay. It’s home to a funky old restaurant called Vahl’s, the headquarters for TiVo and salt flats contaminated by pharmaceuticals that manage to survive treatment at the local sewage facility.

In theory, Alviso-harvested All-Salt should cure just about everything, since it contains ‘valuable drug compounds  . . .  from antibiotics to antidepressants,’ the building blocks of all the wonderful prescriptions we see advertised on tee vee each and every night.

Details here. Informational video below:

And
Should point out, other salts harvested in the South Bay – such as those sourced by Cargill – contain pretty much the same post-pharmaceutical ingredients as All-Salt.

Low-cal sodapop, from Portland

It’s hard to find a good diet soda that doesn’t taste horrible.

But the hand-crafted artists at Thomas Kemper have kinda figured it out. Mostly adding honey to the not-quite-sugar sucralose does the trick. Mostly. The result has some calories, but no where near what one finds in a real soda. And it actually tastes a lot like a real soda. A lot.

Unfortunately, the low-cal Black Cherry (above) is no more. But their Root Beer still wows.

Lucy in Disguise

Lily Allen and Sarah Owen‘s Lucy In Disguise London store opened this week. Click the image to jump to the (new) dramatic website.

Interesting that the website doesn’t show the actual location of the store. And it’s not an online store. But  . . .  here’s a map of London.

Tho if that doesn’t work, I’ve found an address of 10-13 King Street, Covent Garden. That may help.

Ice Cream Man

‘Godby’s intention when he opened Humphry Slocombe in December 2008 was to create a challenging ice cream store. He has succeeded.’

In San Francisco, Jake Godby makes ice cream. Read about it here.

Some music, below.

Bauhaus ice cream

‘California-based architects Natasha Case and Freya Estreller recently set up Coolhaus as some sort of frozen snack homage to industry icons’

I guess if there can be a Bauhaus coffee, there can be Bauhaus ice cream.

Food truck-based ‘Coolhaus’ features ice cream sandwiches with names such as Frank Behry and Mies Vanilla Rohe. Check them out here.

Local in Los Angeles, Austin and (soon in) NYC/Hamptons.

Rick’s Rather Rich Ice Cream

Over in the southern part of Palo Alto, Rick makes incredible ice cream. Which often include some odd flavors – especially the incredible always in time for the Gilroy Garlic Festival creamy garlic.

Drop in, see what he’s crafting this week. Click the logo to head to the website/jump:

Farrell’s comeback

Before Chuck E. Cheese existed, Victorian-themed Farrell’s was THE place to go for ice cream and birthday parties. And they’ve been making a comeback. Starting in Southern California.

Always enjoyed the original menus printed on newsprint and featuring some Charles Dana Gibson (1867-1944) characters (below) on its cover.

Last time I ate at an original Farrell’s, the place was filled with gang members. And each one of them just happened to have a ‘birthday’ (which resulted in free ice cream) every ten minutes or so.

The Return of Joe’s

Rumor has it that Original Joe’s in San Francisco may be reopening this year.

Hoping to stop in for a Martini, of course.
