events – the mehallo blog. beta. http://mehallo.com/blog design, design and more design. Fri, 03 Jan 2020 09:08:25 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=4.8.24 FUSE, then TYPO http://mehallo.com/blog/archives/32041 Thu, 11 Apr 2013 06:00:53 +0000 http://mehallo.com/blog/?p=32041

In 1998 I attended this over-the-top crazy creative conference in San Francisco.

It was called FUSE: Beyond Typography and it was a Neville Brody gig, named for his font magazine. The whole shebang overstuffed itself into San Francisco’s Masonic Center on Nob Hill. And what happened inside was really ‘beyond typography,’ in that the typophiles I knew were complaining where’s the type? It made sense. It was BEYOND.

It was many days. I think a week. Maybe a month, a year? I don’t remember. Nob Hill is up in the clouds, which was fitting. But what I do know is the speakers – which ranged from budding architects Zaha Hadid and Michael Sorkin to author Karrie Jacobs and a slide show from soon-to-pass-on Tibor Kalman – left me recharged about graphic design and what a real creative can do.

Then, turned out the week of FUSE Phil Hartman died.

And

2001 changed everything.

And the economic disaster that followed also put a lot of creative plans on hold. I quit my corporate job right after FUSE and moved on to more meaningful work, eventually landing in teaching. I kept doing the fun work, but bread-n-butter work started to take over. Survival became more important as creativity was pushed aside.

In 2007 I left my position as president of the Art Directors and Artists Club of Sacramento and from a distance, saw it shut down early 2012. BUT I did remember the spark of FUSE (which was a money-loser for the organizers) and kept side projects going. I started this very blog, released a few fonts.

Mike Monteiro: ‘never work for someone you can’t argue with’

Last year TYPO came to San Francisco.

And turns out – TYPO is a smaller FUSE. Same group, been around a bit longer, but leaner. Two days of great speakers – Tina Roth Eisenberg, Jessica Hische, Jim Parkinson, Rod Cavazos, the snarky Mike Monteiro and the crazy colors of Morag Myerscough (we compared nail polish, clothing) – with last year’s event punctuated by a keynote by Neville Brody with emphasis on how all of us sort of dropped the ball on creativity since 1998. It is important to make time for play. Difficult play, going forward. Making what’s next.

This year’s TYPOsf: CONTRAST starts tomorrow. I’ll be tweeting live. And planning my next move.

Project Runway 9, Forever Darling 4 http://mehallo.com/blog/archives/29166 Sun, 28 Aug 2011 15:08:15 +0000 http://mehallo.com/blog/?p=29166

‘One of them just walked off the show and the other just dropped dead.’ -said my wife, Thursday night

Something interesting happened this week on Project Runway. And it wasn’t Cecilia throwing in the towel or Oliver collapsing on a track at the Armory. Nor was it the general bitchiness from teams Joshua or Anthony Ryan.

Heidi Klum actually gave the designers MORE TIME to complete their work. And for the first time this season, I was able to see what I came for: Some good fashion design. Not great, but good.

(Okay, the first challenge was really good, but there was a drop off after that)

A dark cloud of schadenfreude seems to be the Project Runway modus operandi this time out – and frankly, I’m not enjoying it very much. Sadism on tee vee, not a big draw for me.

The Project Runway formula is the same as usual: Take some great talent, surprise them with challenges within a quick time frame, and see what they can do.

Only so far, all we’ve been able to really see are some harebrained stunts for the designers to work with (models on stilts, really??), insane time limits, near nervous breakdowns, panic attacks, Nina saying ‘no’ a whole lot. This show that has become legendary for showcasing incredible designers and pushing careers forward had devolved into Project Sweatshop. Workflow of getting things done over getting things done well.

fallene
For starters, it’s not easy to get on the show – one has to have talent. And one of the portfolios that caught my eye this go around is that of Denver-based Fallene Wells (above).

Her work is inspired by the 1920s – which is something I like to see done well. She told me recently, ‘I have loved the 20s for years maybe since I was 10 or so, I used to watch Chaplin films. Today, I’m finally able to showcase the 20s to its fullest potential.’

Unfortunately, it just won’t be happening on Project Runway or this year, at Lincoln Center. Fallene was one of the earliest casualties this brutal season – tho in the scheme of things, this just gives her time to work on what she’s become known in Denver for: Forever Darling. And a Fallene-produced 1920s-inspired collection will be showcased September 30, 2011 as part of the fourth edition of this annual event.

dahling!
‘The Forever Darling Fashion Show is an annual high-energy, high-profile event that recognizes and promotes Denver’s fashion design scene. Our mission: to raise the profile of Denver’s local independent fashion leaders, to build excitement in the possibilities of individualized fashion options, and to raise money for charity.’

This year’s theme is all about the 1920s and will feature collections from ten local fashion designers, in addition to Fallene. The lettering on the promo materials (above and below) was crafted by illustrator Michael Dee.

In or around the Denver area? Tickets can be snagged here – with a tumblr blog posting updates here.

Fallene Wells’ Facebook fan page can be found here, Etsy here.

As for Project Runway, I’m hoping they get their groove back. It’s one of the few places that is capable of challenging the status quo of reality programming. Tee vee these days really needs the shot in the arm.

Graphic Design Biennial, with breasts http://mehallo.com/blog/archives/22350 http://mehallo.com/blog/archives/22350#comments Mon, 08 Nov 2010 16:10:06 +0000 http://mehallo.com/blog/?p=22350

‘The Biennial of Graphic Arts, which has been held without interruption since 1955, has a longer tradition than any other recurring exhibition in Slovenia and, in fact, is one of the oldest print biennials in the world.’

‘Oh, I get it, it’s a pun on ‘graphic,’ right?’ –Dabitch

This year they’ve decided to promote the Biennial with soapy breast billboards placed all over Ljubljana.

And I’d like to say it’s causing quite the outrage. But, no. It is Europe. It’s just turning a few heads.

But in the US, civilization would come to a stop as we know it. Banks would close, all media would crumble.

NBC would cancel another show.

Printing and wine http://mehallo.com/blog/archives/20353 http://mehallo.com/blog/archives/20353#comments Wed, 27 Oct 2010 01:46:53 +0000 http://mehallo.com/blog/?p=20353

Been busy since I’ve gotten back from TypeCon 2010, so I’m only now slowly going thru photos.

For the TypeCon afterparty at The International Printing Museum, one of my little design touches was bottles of California Typographic Wine; which came in four varieties: Oldstyle, Transitional, Modern and Sans.

Labels were printed on a fabric stock by Hal Hammond – and helping me with the whole vin production were Lucy Schallberger, Jon Coltz, Delve Withrington and (pictured below) Angela Glenn.

Nothing could ever top the Hunter S. Thompson talk I attended back in 1990.

Performa in October: Ribs, honey rain

It’s all about the atmosphere, right?

I seem to just miss attending any of the Futurist dinners that seem to be popping up here and there. And there. And there. It’s interesting that this sort of sub-edible genre is finding an audience – with interpretations that seem to actually work.

OPENfuture at SFMOMA from eatmedaily on Vimeo

the source
F.T. Marinetti’s take on eating didn’t quite work – at least in his reviews of his own dinners, they were more about shock. About changing how we eat. His La Cucina Futurista (1932) was an elaborate joke, with recipes that don’t quite lead to palatable dining experiences.

Some years back, the great Rick Tharp had foil wrapped Ding Dongs, Ho Hos and sauteed Spam at a very modernist Western Art Directors Club awards evening – served with black tablecloth and even more black-clad attendees – though I will admit, I went out for real food after.

sfmoma and the cow
SFMOMA’s recent Futurist dinner included a butchered cow on display (video above), not sure what to make of it – but that’s the point.

Shock and awe.

performa: running with it
In NYC this past Halloween eve, Performa’s Opening Dinner went a bit farther. They had already had an actual Futurist banquet back in February (image above). Sort of a teaser.

October’s feast was an involved experience – featuring a huge pile of peanuts, ribs in honey rain (drizzled on from the ceiling) and chocolate Jeff Koons sculptures destroyed by hammer. Among other things.

ADAC 38th season promotional material

It’s not often one gets to meet one of their heroes.

When I was in high school, a bunch of kids thought it would be funny to sign me up for every magazine subscription they could find – by sending in a large pile of subscription cards. My parents were not amused; but it was Rolling Stone that I kept. I fell in love with the hand-inked masthead – and decided that that was what I wanted to do.

Hand-ink mastheads.

Not a big field. And who knew people actually did this? I wanted to do it, and early attempts (for my high school paper) netted not so wonderful results. Who knew that someday I’d actually be drawing fonts as a consequence.

Rolling Stone masthead by Jim Parkinson

Around five years ago, I finally met the guy behind the logotype – lettering artist Jim Parkinson. And the conversations have been great – as long as I don’t actually call him hero, he’s cool. And (who knew?) we both like fresh anchovies. Which I’ve found can gross out anyone who is eating near us.

using jim’s fonts
I used Jim Parkinson’s Sutro fonts on promotional materials for the 38th season of the Sacramento Art Directors and Artists Club. I was the newly appointed president, so I was determined to use fonts from the best of the best and (of course) Jim was on my list.

Some of the collateral included an events calendar (above) where I digitally ‘channeled’ Morris Fuller Benton’s original ATF Cheltenham calendar cuts using the Sutro family as well as an experimental t-shirt design (below) listing all speakers and events planned for the season:

The pattern was created by setting Sutro Shaded Initials with negative leading in two almost identical overlapping text boxes. Each box was in a different color – one aligned justified, the other centered.

type at the fair
The following summer, I had the honor of giving a talk on California-themed typography – with Jim – at an unusual venue, The State Fair. I gave an historic overview of 19th century typography and Jim showcased how he adapts from these types for contemporary projects.

It was an odd thing to do (flyer below), but really fun. Spent the week before pouring thru specimen books to make a slide showing ATF Jenson, the forerunner of both the Rolling Stone logotype and Jim’s Parkinson fonts.

a california guy
Most of Jim’s fonts are named for California locations and he keeps busy designing magazine logotypes and painting. Drop by his website here.

And for a great overview of his body of work, here’s a MyFonts interview with Jim. Or if you want to see some interesting posts about a Chilean soap opera going hog wild with the Rolling Stone logo, go here (I just had to include that one).

And if you read magazines – even just staring at them while in line at the store – you’ve seen his work. It is everywhere, which is the coolest part. Can’t pass a magazine rack without thinking of Jim.

Futurism by the bay http://mehallo.com/blog/archives/5955 http://mehallo.com/blog/archives/5955#comments Tue, 13 Oct 2009 08:53:08 +0000 http://mehallo.com/blog/?p=5955

‘Futurism was an international art movement founded in Italy in 1909. It was (and is) a refreshing contrast to the weepy sentimentalism of Romanticism. The Futurists loved speed, noise, machines, pollution, and cities; they embraced the exciting new world that was then upon them rather than hypocritically enjoying the modern world’s comforts while loudly denouncing the forces that made them possible. Fearing and attacking technology has become almost second nature to many people today; the Futurist manifestos show us an alternative philosophy. Too bad they were all Fascists.’ -Kim Scarborough’s Guide to Futurism

This year is the 100th anniversary of F. T. Marinetti’s Manifesto of Futurism (1909) – and San Francisco has celebrations planned October 14th thru 18th.

Titled Metal + Machine + Manifesto = Futurism’s First 100 Years – events include a Fortunato Depero exhibition at the Italian Cultural Institute, make your own print of Aldo Palazzeschi’s futurist poem ‘Let me have my fun’ (1910) at The San Francisco Center for the Book, a concert, a Futurist banquet, talks at the SFMOMA and much, much, more.

[1] To start, check out the event list here.

[2] For more about Futurism, visit the Italian Futurism site.

[3] Here’s some Futurist fonts at P22. And the Futurismo soundtrack to go with them.

[4] I’d be lying if I said the Geometrique version of Jeanne Moderno didn’t have Futurist roots. Here’s a direct link to this particular font.

[5] Here’s a post from this very blog, showcasing Marinetti’s Futurist Manifesto interpreted as film, and a collection of early avant garde shorts.

Marinetti

[6] And as a kicker  . . .  here’s a cool article comparing Futurism to Punk, by Karen Pinkus.

Futurism was very Italian and over the top. And yeah, too bad they were actually Fascists.

Bebel Platz’s Berlin memorial to Nazi book burning; even the font used in the memorial used to piss off the Nazis

This week is The American Library Association’s Banned Books Week. Here’s a link to the 11 Most Ironically Banned Books of All Time. Go read something that might change your view of the world. Something you shouldn’t be allowed to read.

revenge of the puritans
Censorship hasn’t gone away. It’s become a way of life, post-Janet Jackson. (Even the video I’m linking to is hidden behind a warning – you’re kidding, right??) Today, I can’t watch a talk show without both the naughty word and the mouths blurred out. Wonder why seeing a mouth silently form a naughty word was ever acceptable??

censorship in berkeley?
Many years ago I had a comic strip in Berkeley’s Daily Californian. It was censored repeatedly by the editorial staff – I came to see their (my term for it) ‘neo liberal behavior’ as, ‘We will fight to our dying breath to support your right to free speech – but – what do you have there? No, we can’t have any of that. Pull it.’

Would routinely find – three weeks later when the subscription copy showed up – they kept running this same stock strip over and over (And at the time, SPY magazine – probably the strip’s main influence – was doing so much more).

thinking
Most of it were ideas. They were actually cool with profanity (hardly used any). But  . . .  ideas are dangerous. Ideas change culture, challenge established systems, frighten a lot of people who have their world already figured out. People will die to keep others from changing what they believe is unquestionably true.

Sorry, in my world – things aren’t so black and white. Absolutes  . . .  not so absolute. And I like surprises. They’re fun.

And I like to be able to read whatever I wish to.

I know – it’s really a lot to ask.

book banning today: the map
Here’s a link to a Google map showing book bans and challenges throughout the United States. It is estimated that around 75-80% of actual incidents are not reported.

FEEEL: An Exhibition of New Media_ http://mehallo.com/blog/archives/343 Sun, 16 Nov 2008 17:30:12 +0000 http://mehallo.com/blog/?p=343 img { border:none;}

I’ve been working on this one for a few months and as I write this we’re about 1/2 way thru set up.

I am co-curating the FEEEL gallery show with Jiayi Young, and it’s sort of a similar approach as was taken for the Spoken With Eyes exhibit I headed up back in 2006  . . .  only this time, a smaller group of artists.

And we have two openings planned! [1] Monday November 17 at noon AND [2] a huge party with great food and DJ Inue. Both on Friday November 21 from 6 – 9 pm.

And FEEEL will feature a select group of regional and international artists:

Natalie Berwernitz, Marek Goldowski
Rachel Clarke, M. Azevedo
Daid Daragones
Glenda Drew
Girola
George Holden/Abercrome Lights
Kornel
Olivier Lelong
Joe Miller
Marco Rea
Mick Sheldon with ARC Physics
Joel Smith
Justin Wood

and music by
Happyboy
Spazzkid
Machine & Ses Machines

For more information and a map, please visit adac.org/feeel. FEEEL runs thru December 11.

Update: FEEEL slideshow posted here.

Note: The second batch of photos capture the lighting really well – and yes, we did have both regular Twinkies and Red Velvet versions for the Friday opening.
